The Hardest Leadership Job You’ll Ever Have…

I think the most challenging leadership role that many of us will ever have is leading that person in the mirror. Before you ever lead a team, a company, or even a movement, you first need to be able to effectively lead yourself. I have often said that self-awareness is the foundation to great leadership and when we are talking about self-leadership, it can be a true superpower.
It’s one thing to lead a team. It’s a whole other thing to lead the version of you that wants to hit snooze, avoid conflict, procrastinate on your goals, or reach for instant gratification over long-term growth. Self-discipline is your trusty sidekick in the quest for personal and professional greatness. It’s the ability to keep your impulses in check, stay focused, and push through challenges. Leading yourself means having the self-discipline to stick to your goals, manage your time like a pro, and dodge distractions. With self-discipline, you build resilience and tackle obstacles head-on.
Building your self-awareness and leading yourself is like any muscle, the more you use it with intention, the stronger it gets. Here are 10 ways you can build your self-leadership skills.
- Know Thyself: Self-awareness is like having a superpower. It’s about understanding your strengths, weaknesses, values, and what makes you tick. When you’re in tune with yourself, you can make decisions that truly resonate with who you are. I am a behavioral assessment junkie. I love them and always find them insightful. One of my personal favorites is CliftonStrengths. If you are interested in a Strengths Discovery session or any other behavioral assessments such as DISC, Predictive Index, MBTI, or Hogan, reach out to me and I would love to connect.
- Set Goals and Crush Them: Setting and achieving personal goals is a key part of self-leadership. It’s about defining clear, achievable objectives and crafting a plan to hit them. Goals give you direction and purpose, motivating you to take action and stay on track. When you achieve your goals, it boosts your confidence and reinforces your belief in your abilities. Plus, it shows others the power of perseverance and dedication.
- Focus on What You Want Most and Not Just What You Want Now: It’s easy to get caught up in what feels good in the moment…rest, distraction, another game of candy crush… but self-leadership means keeping your eye on the bigger picture. Ask yourself if your choices are moving you closer to the life you want or just giving you temporary satisfaction or relief.
- Build Boundaries like a Boss: Self-leadership means protecting your time, energy, and focus. Remember that every time you are saying yes to something you are really saying no to something else.
- Remember- Discomfort is the Currency for Your Success: Growth and comfort rarely ride in the same car. If you want real transformation, you’ve got to be willing to get a little uncomfortable. Discomfort isn’t a sign you’re doing it wrong; it’s often proof you’re stretching into something better.
- Keep the Promises You Make to You: The commitments you make to yourself matter just as much, if not more, than the ones you make to others. When you consistently follow through for you, you build self-trust, confidence, and momentum that compounds over time.
- Allow for Daily Reflection: Personally, I journal every day. Maybe that isn’t your gig, but at a minimum take time out each day to reflect. What went well? What did you learn? How will you be a better version of yourself tomorrow than you were today?
- Keep Growing and Invest in Yourself: Leading yourself means committing to continuous improvement. Keep learning, whether it is through courses, books or coaching. It is worth it to keep leveling up and leveling up and you are worth the investment.
- Have the Hard Conversations with Yourself: Sometimes the person we avoid being honest with… is ourselves. Sit in truth, even when it’s messy. That’s where transformation lives.
When you learn to lead yourself well, everything changes. You become the kind of leader who doesn’t just talk about growth. You model it. Your habits, your mindset, your consistency… they create a ripple effect that inspires others to step up, too.
Self-leadership is the foundation for every other kind of leadership. It’s how we lead with authenticity, resilience, and purpose…not just when it’s easy, but especially when it’s not.
If you’re looking to lead others more powerfully, start by leading the person in the mirror. That’s where real influence begins.
