The Tyranny of “Or”: How Shifting Your Mindset Opens Endless Possibilities
A couple of Thanksgivings ago, I remember asking my brother if he wanted apple pie or pumpkin pie for dessert. He looked at me, bewildered, and said, “I will not be bound by the tyranny of or.” In other words, he wasn’t falling into the either/or trap—he wanted both.
That moment stuck with me because it was more than just a funny response. It was a reminder of how often we limit ourselves with unnecessary choices. Whether it’s deciding between career growth or work-life balance, being kind or being assertive, or focusing on stability or chasing passion, the word “or” quietly shapes the way we see our options.
But what if that little word is holding us back more than we realize?
This is what I call the tyranny of “or”—a mindset that forces us into false choices, limiting our thinking and shrinking what we believe is possible. When we think in terms of “or,” we unintentionally box ourselves into narrow paths, often missing out on opportunities that could exist if we shifted our perspective.
Imagine approaching decisions with the word “and” instead. Suddenly, the world opens up:
- Career growth and work-life balance.
- Kindness and assertiveness.
- Stability and passion.
It’s not about overloading yourself or chasing conflicting goals. It’s about recognizing that life is rarely an either/or equation. More often than not, there’s a creative solution waiting just beyond the limits of “or.”
It’s natural to think in terms of “or.” It feels safe but the truth is that it limits growth. Our brains like clear-cut options because they feel safer and easier to manage. Choosing one path over another creates a sense of certainty. But this safety net often comes at the cost of creativity, growth, and fulfillment.
Think about how many breakthroughs in business, art, and science have happened because someone asked, “Why not both?” Instead of accepting a trade-off, they found a way to innovate and expand what was possible.
When you break free from the tyranny of “or,” you unlock a mindset of abundance, creativity, and possibility. You stop seeing life as a series of trade-offs and start recognizing the opportunities that exist when you refuse to be limited by false choices.
So next time you’re faced with an “either/or” decision, ask yourself: “What if I didn’t have to choose?” You might be surprised by what’s possible when you shift from “or” to “and.”
